Boring Versus Turning
The metal turning processes of both boring and turning involve removing extra material from a piece. As such, boring generally refers to ID work, while turning commonly refers to outside diameter (OD) work.
Whether turning or boring, solid carbide versus indexable carbide is primarily a matter of size. If a workpiece is large enough to accommodate an indexable tool, it is generally more cost-efficient to utilize replaceable inserts.
Carbide Boring Process
Boring requires that an internal hole must be pre-drilled in the workpiece. Performed on a lathe machine, the boring bar is clamped into a tool post. The bar must be secured tightly to prevent vibrations or chatter. The workpiece is attached to a spindle and spins while the boring bar is moved upon the X- and Z-axes of the lathe machine. The contact between the boring bar and the spinning workpiece enlarges the drilled hole to the established parameters.
